Pakistan says UAE eyeing investments in Sindh’s desalination, transport, construction sectors – Pakistan

A spokesman for the chief minister of Pakistan’s southern Sindh province said on Thursday the UAE was interested in investing in a desalination plant in the port city of Karachi as well as in transport and construction projects.

The announcement came after a meeting between CM Murad Ali Shah and the UAE Consul General in Karachi, Bakhit Atiq Al Rimithiki, on the occasion of the National Day of the Emirates.

The UAE is one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners and a major source of foreign investment, valued at over $10 billion in […]

Metrowater to start replacing portion of reverse osmosis membranes in Nemmeli desalination plant by December – India

Chennai Metrowater is set to replace reverse osmosis (RO) membranes at the desalination plant in Nemmeli. The work is likely to start by the second week of December.

The desalination plant has a capacity to treat 110 million litres of seawater a day (mld). Currently, the plant produces nearly 60 mld of drinking water, which is supplied to the southern parts of the city. RO membranes are a crucial component in producing quality freshwater. The plant has 7,056 RO membranes, which are used for converting seawater into freshwater.

Dubai’s desalinated water production rises by 4.6% to meet increasing demand and keep pace with the Emirate’s growth – UAE

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)’s total desalinated water production in the third quarter of 2024 grew by 4.64% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching a record 40.5 billion imperial gallons. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to meet the increasing demand for water and to keep pace with Dubai’s unprecedented growth. Peak desalinated water demand reached 455 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), which is a 4.92% increase over the same period in the previous year.

“DEWA plans to increase its water desalination capacity to 735 MIGD by 2030, from 495 MIGD […]

Alarming Water Levels at Lake Kournas – Greece

A striking example of the crisis is Lake Kournas near Georgioupoli in Chania, where water levels have dropped significantly to 2.2 metres from a maximum average of 7.5 metres. Aris Papadogiannis, CEO of the Development Organisation of Crete, expressed concern in an interview with ERT Chania. He remarked, “Lake Kournas has never been in such a state. This recurring hydrological deficiency over two years has drastically affected the local flora and fauna.”

Electrodialysis (ED) offers an alternative ion-removal method – India

The study showed that the SF-EDM process achieved a remarkable salinity reduction of over 90%, reaching 93% in the experimental trials. This efficiency was coupled with a total system water recovery rate of 90%, combining reverse osmosis and SF-EDM processes. The specific energy consumption ranged from 1 to 7 kWh/m³, indicating a favorable energy profile compared to traditional desalination methods.

A key finding was this method’s ability to selectively separate ions. It effectively distinguishes between monovalent and divalent ions, allowing sulfate and calcium to be separated into distinct concentrate streams. This selectivity is particularly important […]

Desalination has a more negative reputation than other industries – Chile

The first reputational analysis of the water industry and desalination technology in Chile was presented at the International Congress of the Latin American Association for Desalination and Water Reuse (Aladyr) 2024, highlighting that desalination technology has average visibility and favorability, but with predominantly negative feelings and high levels of aggressiveness.

At the most important event in the desalination and water reuse industry in Latin America, an analysis was presented on the reputation of this activity in comparison with sectors such as energy, mining, agriculture, forestry and fishing.

ACWA Power reports 16% profit increase amid 26 ongoing projects – KSA

Saudi-listed ACWA Power, the world’s largest private water desalination company, and a leader in energy transition and first mover into green hydrogen, today announced its consolidated financial results for the nine months ended 30 September 2024.

Operating income before impairment losses and other expenses reached SAR 2,365 million, 12.5% higher compared to the same period in 2023 mainly on account of an investment gain in restructuring of a project, along with a capital recycling gain. The Company’s net profit—attributable to equity holders of the parent—reached SAR 1,255 million for the period, 16% higher compared to […]

Transforming Water Scarcity into Abundance: ATESS Energy Storage and Solar-Powered Desalination in Saudi Arabia – KSA

Saudi Arabia faces a severe water scarcity crisis. The country’s annual water consumption reaches 30 billion cubic meters, while it produces only about 2 billion cubic meters of surface water each year. As a result, seawater desalination has become essential for supplying water, especially in urban and industrial areas. Yet, this solution is energy-intensive and largely powered by fossil fuels, which adds both economic and environmental costs. To address these challenges, ATESS has introduced an innovative solar-powered energy storage solution designed to make desalination more sustainable and accessible.

Egypt to roll out tender for desalination mega-project – Egypt

Egypt is advancing a major desalination initiative under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, with initial tenders expected in late 2024.

The project, managed by The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) alongside the Ministry of Finance’s PPP Central Unit, seeks to establish renewable energy-powered desalination plants across Egypt to reach a production capacity of 8.85 million cubic meters per day (m³/day) by 2050. This aligns with Egypt’s national water security strategy and environmental sustainability objectives.

Three locations still being studied for future Costa del Sol desalination plant as draft plan deadline slips – Spain

The future desalination plant in the Axarquía area to the east of Malaga province is still in the hands of bureaucratic procedures which continue to delay the project, for which 100 million euros have been budgeted by Spain’s central government. After it was announced last June that the project could be drafted by the end of the year, this deadline has now been extended by a few more months, until spring 2025.
