UAE researchers are making desalination carbon neutral and more environmentally friendly

The process is energy-intensive and expensive, and it has a large environmental footprint. It produces greenhouse gases as well as concentrated salts, known as brine, which are pumped back into the oceans and are detrimental to the marine environment. For every litre of water produced, the process creates about 1.5 litres of brine. These factors limit the expansion of desalination and its ability to keep up with the rising demand for potable water in Gulf countries including the UAE.

Solar desalination via photovoltaic-thermal energy – UK

UK researchers have proposed the use of photovoltaic-thermal energy for desalination purposes, via an approach based on synergistic electro-thermal coupling mechanisms. They have found that some system configurations could offer a lower levelized cost of desalinated water, in addition to higher efficiencies.

Construction of Sfax desalination plant in Tunisia to commence – Tunisia

The project entails construction of a desalination plant in the locality of Gargour, located 20 km from the city of Sfax. The plant will have a capacity of 100,000 m³ per day. The water treated in the plant will be stored in a reservoir.

The project also includes the construction of a pumping station and the laying of pipelines to bring drinking water to the city of Sfax. Sonede intends to double the plant’s capacity (200,000 m³ of water per day) in the future.

Phase one of the project require an overall […]

Taqa, Engie to develop Mirfa 2 RO desal project – Abu Dhabi

Mirfa 2 Reverse Osmosis will become the UAE’s third largest low-carbon intensive RO plant once fully operational, said a statement.

M2 RO will desalinate seawater using low-carbon intensive RO technology to produce up to 120 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of potable water, equivalent to approximately 550,000 cu m per day, sufficient to meet the water demand of up to 210,000 households in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
