Arizona: Desalination without a Coastline? – USA

In Israel, for example, five massive desalination plants on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea produce nearly a half-million acre feet of fresh water per year, an amount the nation plans to double by 2030. Israel’s Sorek Desalination Plant, located a few miles south of Tel Aviv, produces 185,000 acre feet of fresh water per year, from a highly automated operation that occupies only about 25 acres. Approximately 80 percent of Israel’s municipal water comes from desalination, and this nation of 9 million people is now exporting surplus water to Jordan.

Desalination Project to Come on Stream at Iranian Nuclear Plant – Tehran, Iran

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) will contribute to the construction of the desalination plant in Bushehr, which will have a capacity of 70,000 cubic meters per day, he said.

A major water desalination project will be launched at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in south of Iran in the coming weeks, an official said.

Veolia and TotalEnergies partner to build the largest solar system for a desalination plant – Oman

TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed an agreement to start the construction of the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) systems providing power for a desalination plant in Oman, in the city of Sur.

The power plant will be located on the site of the Sharqiyah Desalination plant, which is a reference in Oman and in the gulf region, supplying drinking water to more than 600,000 inhabitants of the Sharqiyah region.

CALIFORNIA UNVEILS NEW WATER STRATEGY AMID SAVAGE MEGADROUGHT – California, USA

His plan calls for creating storage for four million acre-feet of water and recycling or reusing 800,000 acre-feet per year by 2030 in addition to more stormwater capture and desalination projects.

An acre-foot of water is generally considered enough to supply two urban households per year.

«The hots are getting a lot hotter, the dries are getting a lot drier and … the wets are getting wetter,» Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday at a desalination plant under construction in Antioch, 72 kilometres inland from San Francisco, that will turn brackish water […]

Polish nanotechnology scientists say it may soon be possible to obtain drinking water from sea water without using a power supply – Gdansk, Poland

Called NanoseenX, the team’s design consists of a cascade of membranes that filter out different impurities, including salt. According to the company, within two minutes you can get 200 ml of water, from which 97 percent of salt is removed.

The NanoseenX solution also has a mineralisation and salinity control, making it possible to remove over 99.9 percent of salt. The device works without a power supply – water flows through the filters due to gravity. The filter can be placed anywhere, for example on a beach or ship.

Climate change means some coastal groundwater may soon be too salty to drink. What can cities do – Cape May, New Jersey, USA

Cape May solved its problem with desalination. Could the rest of the world follow suit?

The only feasible solution was desalination…. “We’re looking to really step it up …[with] the next plant … that’ll be sustainable for … the next 50 plus years,” Mendo said.

Plant operator Joe Mendo says 70 percent of the water that goes in comes out as fresh water. The other 30 percent is concentrated salt water that goes into a nearby creek, which, he said, is not harmful because it is far less salty than actual salt water. […]

Egypt’s Red Sea resort that’s making waves

As I sat under the welcome shade of a cluster of palm trees, my gaze drifted over the calm waters of the lagoon ahead of me – and was caught by a line of neatly labelled terracotta rubbish bins.

To be honest, when I’d imagined my trip to Egypt’s Red Sea region, I’d pictured swimming in warm, crystal-clear waters and discovering vibrant coral reefs surrounded by brightly coloured fish.

And though I was able to do all of that, it was not the marine beauty that captivated me the most, but rather […]

Perur desal plant delayed; no new bids – Chennai

Metrowater’s 400MLD desalination plant at Perur near Nemmeli is yet to materialize.

Tenders seeking to build the plant were called in 2020 but, an RTI reply has revealed, a contractor has not been chosen in the last two years.

The Metrowater board has also not called for fresh tenders. Activists think it could be because the DMK does not want to give the project to contractors identified by the AIADMK government.

The delay has prolonged the wait for water for an estimated 22 lakh people living in southern parts […]
