World’s largest reverse osmosis desalination project to open in Abu Dhabi in 2022 – United Arab Emirates

Emirates Water and Electricity Company, EWEC – a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation – and ACWA Power – the Saudi-based developer, investor and operator of power generation and desalinated water plants – have confirmed the successful financial closing of the world’s largest reverse osmosis desalination plant.

The new plant will be located at the Taweelah power and water desalination complex in Abu Dhabi, with completion expected in 2022.

BHP to take US$780M hit on renewable move – Chile

The company announced four new renewable power agreements for the Escondida and Spence operations.

It is part of BHP’s goal to shift to 100% renewable energy at the mines from the mid-2020s.

„These new renewable energy contracts will increase flexibility for our power portfolio and will ensure security of supply for our operations, while also reducing costs and displacing CO2 emissions,“ BHP Minerals Americas president Daniel Malchuk said.

U.S. EPA to Provide $585 Million for Climate-Resilient Huntington Beach Seawater Desalination Plant – United States

Poseidon Water released the following statement in response to today’s announcement that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected the proposed Huntington Beach Desalination Project to apply for $585 million in credit assistance under the federal government’s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA).

„We are pleased by the U.S. EPA’s acknowledgment that the Huntington Beach Desalination Project is an environmentally sound, regionally significant project that will produce clean, safe drinking water and high-quality jobs,“ said Poseidon Water CEO Carlos Riva.

South Sinai to introduce ZLD plants beginning with Sharm El Sheikh – Egypt

South Sinai contemplates introducing water treatment plants operating in the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system in parallel to adding more desalination plants while improving the efficiency of existing ones.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company, EWEC, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation, ADPower, and Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power have announced the successful financial closing of the world’s largest reverse osmosis desalination plant.

The new plant will be located at the Taweelah power and water desalination complex in Abu Dhabi, with completion expected in 2022. ADPower and Mubadala Investment Company hold a 60% equity interest in the Taweelah project while ACWA Power holds the remaining 40%.

Work on a third desalination plant in Nemmeli to begin by October-end – Asia

Work on constructing a third desalination plant at Nemmeli, along East Coast Road, is set to begin by the month-end.

Late last month, the U.S. Department of Energy announced a $100 million research grant to the National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI) to lead an Energy-Water Desalination Hub. Meagan Mauter, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, is NAWI’s research director.
