Better model of water under extreme conditions could aid understanding of Earth’s mantle.

Deep inside the Earth exist pockets of water, but the liquid there isn’t like the water on the surface.

When exposed to unimaginably high temperatures and pressures, water exhibits all sorts of weird phases and properties, from remaining a liquid at temperatures 10 times higher than the boiling point to existing as a liquid and a solid at the same time.

Cape Town Scraps Desalination Barge Plan as Water Crisis Eases.

Cape Town’s city council scrapped plans to hire a desalination barge to supplement the city’s water supply after good winter rains helped ease the worst drought on record.

South Africa’s second-biggest city will continue implementing other projects to ensure taps don’t run dry, including curtailing usage by reducing the water pressure and tapping underground aquifers, said Xanthea Limberg, the mayoral committee member for water and waste services.

Solar Desalination.

The Solar Desalination funding program will explore novel technologies that use solar-thermal energy to assist in creating freshwater from otherwise unusable waters like seawater, brackish water, and contaminated water.

Improvements to thermal desalination technologies and low-cost, integrated designs for solar-thermal collection and storage can reduce the cost of desalination, while also enabling smaller and more portable systems.

Mitsui to build desalination plant for BHP’s Spence copper mine in Chile.

Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. confirmed Thursday it has been selected to build a desalination plant for BHP’s (ASX, NYSE:BHP) Spence copper mine in Chile, as part of a $2.5 billion mine expansion approved earlier this year and which will add another 50 years to the operation’s productive life.

Mitsui will build the plant at Mejillones port, about 60 km north of Antofagasta city, through a joint venture with Técnicas de Desalinazación de Aguas (Tedagua), a unit of Spain’s ACS Group with strengths in water-related business, it said.

Learning how boron evaporates will improve water desalination technologies.

High-temperature desalination technologies can efficiently reduce the concentrations of a chemical element in seawater to make it an effective substitute for fresh water. Research into how the element boron evaporates could result in higher-quality drinking and irrigation water.

Boron is a trace mineral found in concentrations of 0.001-100 milligrams per litre in ground and surface freshwater, but in higher concentrations in seawater (averaging 4.5 mg/l).

Are we running out of water?

Water seems the most renewable of all the Earth’s resources. It falls from the sky as rain, it surrounds us in the oceans that cover nearly three-quarters of the planet’s surface, and in the polar ice caps and mountain glaciers.

It is the source of life on Earth and quite possibly beyond – the discovery of traces of water on Mars aroused excitement because it was the first indication that life may have existed there.

Antioch looks to use project stabilizing agreement for $60 million desalination project.

The city has a $60 million desalination plant project about to hit the pipelines and is working on agreements to ensure it gets workers in a county bursting at the seams with large, ongoing construction.

City Council members voted 5 to 0 on Tuesday night to pursue a project stabilization agreement (PSA) for the city’s future brackish water desalination plant. A PSA is a pre-hire umbrella contract that consolidates wages, rules and disputes for a number of different contractors or unions on a large project.
