Summit Meeting on an Underwater Mountain Marine scientists from Kiel install observatory in the tropical Atlantic

17 February 2017/Kiel, Mindelo. Seamounts are oases of the oceans: they form diverse ecosystems and provide habitats for numerous organisms. However, the links between physical, biological and biogeochemical processes that surround seamounts are still enigmatic. Tomorrow….

Desalination not the answer to W Cape water woes

„A 450 mega litre plant can cost up to R15 billion. The maintenance costs of that is also very high. A 150 mega litre plant, the maintenance costs can cost round about R380 million a year, but we must measure that against no water. Expensive water versus no water as well. Desalination will have an environmental impact because we need to manage the brine. We will pull in the best intellect in the country, even worldwide to support us, to help us to find the right solutions, so that the actions today don’t impact our future generations,“ says Bredell.

Doosan has developed waste to desalination conversion process

SEOUL, South Korea – An Integrated Waste-to-Water Process (IWWP) has been developed by Doosan Lentjes and the water division of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.

Much like thermal desalination units that off-take heat from co-located power plants, the process would direct steam from the incineration of municipal solid waste to be used in the seawater desalination process.

The company said that using the technology, around 300 tons of municipal waste has the potential to generate enough potable water for 100,000 people.

EU and UNICEF inaugurate Gaza’s largest seawater desalination plant

GAZA, 19 January 2017 – Today the European Union and UNICEF officially inaugurated the largest seawater desalination plant built in the Gaza Strip so far.

The €10 million plant, funded by the European Union, has the capacity of producing 6,000 m3 of potable water daily to provide around 75,000 Palestinians with safe drinking water in the southern Gaza Strip—about 35,000 people in Khan Younis and 40,000 people in Rafah.
