The project by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is set to come up on 12 hectares of land at Manori village. The proposed plant will be equipped to supply 200 million litres of water.

…the supply of water is a trickle at 3,800 MLD as against the daily demand of 4,200 MLD. The civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has turned futuristic and proposed to set up a desalination plant to transform the natural saline water from the Arabian Sea to quench the thirst of Mumbai residents.

HECS wins Mega Desalination Plant O&M Contracts – New Delhi, India

The contracts include a 22 MLD Desalination Plant at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd, in Chennai, where seawater is made usable for the refinery. Similarly, the second contract won is at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd Vizag Refinery for the Operation and Maintenance of their new Desalination Plant which is currently being commissioned at Vizag.

The new plant will reduce its freshwater intake. The third contract is an SWRO plant at Nuclear Power Corporation of India’s Kudankulam facility, which is in the southern part of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai’s fourth desalination plant construction to begin in January – India

The â‚ą5,000-crore plant with a capacity to treat 400 million litres of water per day is coming up at Perur and is expected to be ready by July 2026.

Meanwhile, work on the third desalination plant of 150 mld capacity coming up on 10.5 acres of land at Nemmeli is apace. Officials said about 60% of the work has been completed so far. Of the 23 treatment units, construction of 18 structures is in progress.

Nemmeli plant shut for maintenance, water supply takes hit in Chennai – India

The two zones require 45 million litres per day (MLD) of water, and receive 38 MLD, of which 28 MLD are supplied from Nemmeli desalination plant and 10 MLD from Veeranam, officials said.  “In the last six months, the Nemmeli plant was shut for maintenance often.

With the Nemmeli desalination plant shut for maintenance, people in parts of Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones haven’t had water supply for nearly a week. They said they are forced to buy water from private suppliers as the plant is being closed every month.

Work in progress to replace RO membranes in Nemmeli desalination plant – Chennai, India

Nearly 75.29 million litres of water is being supplied to the southern parts of the city daily now. Though the plant has a capacity to treat 110 mld of seawater, production is restricted to balance more drawal of water from the reservoirs. Water supply has not been stopped as the work is being taken up in phases.

Desalination plants on Karachi coast to help overcome water shortage – Pakistan

The desalination plants will be used to provide water to the residents of the old city areas and the neighbourhood of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) near the seaside. The proposed desalination plants will each supply five million gallons daily (MGD) water to the city.

The KWSB has proposed three locations for setting up the desalination plant in the city i.e. Ibrahim Hyderi, near Ayesha Mosque in DHA Phase-7, and near Village Restaurant at Sea View.

Perur desal plant delayed; no new bids – Chennai

Metrowater’s 400MLD desalination plant at Perur near Nemmeli is yet to materialize.

Tenders seeking to build the plant were called in 2020 but, an RTI reply has revealed, a contractor has not been chosen in the last two years.

The Metrowater board has also not called for fresh tenders. Activists think it could be because the DMK does not want to give the project to contractors identified by the AIADMK government.

Wabag secures repeat order worth Rs 430 crore from RIL

VA Tech Wabag has secured an order towards engineering, procurement and construction of a 53mld desalination plant at Jamnagar, Gujarat, worth about Rs 430 crore from Reliance Industries.

The EPC scope of work under this RIL order includes design, engineering, procurement, supply, construction, erection, pre-commissioning, commissioning and performance guarantee test run of the sea water reverse osmosis plant, slated to be built in the premises of RIL’s refinery at Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Wabag has already executed a 24mld SWRO plant in the same premises.
