The utility, equipped with reverse osmosis technology, will have a daily capacity of 570,000 cubic meter per day to supply 2 million people in the cities of Riyadh and Qassim once commercially operational in 2024.

Unveiling the big infrastructure plan, NWC said the project scope includes construction of 40 water tanks with a total capacity of 1.6 million cu m in addition to pumping stations and laying of 493 km of strategic pipeline networks that will be gradually operated to serve beneficiaries in Dammam, Khobar, Jubail, Al Ahsa and Al Qatif with 24/7 supply.

This project is the largest of its kind in the world for water production based on Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology using solar energy. It is DEWA’s first Independent Water Producer (IWP) model project. The water desalination capacity in Dubai is currently 490 MIGD. This capacity will increase to 670 MIGD in 2026 with the completion of this project.

The period saw Acwa Power receive from the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) the commercial operation certificate for Group 2 of Taweelah RO Desalination Company located in Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Now supplying 183 million gallons per day to the Abu Dhabi network.
A company based in Cape Town scored a R5 billion contract to design, build and operate a desalination facility in Saudi Arabia.
The contract was awarded to GrahamTek by The Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC).
SWCC controls about 40% of the world’s desalination plants, and produces 6 billion litres of water for Saudi Arabia every day.
