In an initiative that can go a long way in addressing water salinity in a sustainable way, a pilot project of solar water desalinaton has been launched in the Sultanate.

Al Dahira water transmission system to be operational by year-end – Oman

A major water transmission project that will supply desalinated water from Suhar to towns in Al Dhahirah Governorate will be operational before the end of this year, according to an official of Oman Water and Wastewater Services (OWWC).

Eng Ibrahim bin Hamad al Hasani, Project Manager, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the transmission project, currently 81 per cent complete, will ease the Al Dhahirah’s dependence on groundwater for its requirements of potable water. Groundwater supplies are currently sourced from the Al Massarat Basin.

Spanish firm wins contract to design new water project in Oman – Oman

Spanish based international engineering consultant Savener has announced that it has been awarded a contract to undertake the engineering design of a new desalination plant due to come up at Barka in South Al Batinah Governorate.

Savener, a global grouping of consultants with expertise ranging from aeronautics and water desalination to energy efficiency and civil architecture, says the contract was awarded by the partnership of GS Inima of Spain and Italian Fisia Italimpianti of Italy.

New Salalah desalination plant commences commercial operation – Oman

Abengoa Agua, the water division of Spanish based international infrastructure and energy specialist, has announced the successful completion of the construction of a reverse osmosis desalination plant in Salalah.

The 113,500 cubic metres /day capacity desalination plant has been built for a consortium led by ACWA Power and also composed of Veolia and Dhofar International for Investment and Development Co SAOG.

The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has acted as offtaker.

Pact signed to operate Diam’s facilities with solar energy – Oman

The Public Authority for Water – Diam and Shell Oman have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to operate some water assets of Diam using solar energy.

The pact came in accordance with Diam’s vision regarding enhancement of the operational efficiency of its assets, and also within the community initiatives undertaken by Shell Oman.
