As water shortages become a reality across the globe, authorities in drought-prone areas are looking to Saudi Arabia’s desalination industry for inspiration.

The Kingdom produces more desalinated water than any other nation, with 27 plants transforming sea brine into five million cubic meters of fresh water a day. The industry has grown rapidly in recent years.

In January, the Kingdom announced plans to invest more than $500 million (SR1.874 billion) to build nine plants in Jeddah.

Saudi Arabian national petroleum and natural gas company Saudi Aramco said that water reservoirs far from the Gulf previously required significant quantities of non-potable groundwater for injection to help produce oil. In 1979, the company created a Sea Water Injection Department (SWID) to replace most withdrawals from this source.

Doosan to construct RO desalination plant in Saudi Arabia

The Yanbu4 seawater desalination plant will be constructed in Ar Rayyis, located about 260km north of Jeddah and will be applying the reverse osmosis (RO) process, which removes salt from seawater.

Doosan plans to construct the Yanbu4 seawater desalination plant on an EPC basis, taking on the responsibilities of engineering, procurement and construction.

The desalination plant will supply 450,000 tonnes of potable water daily to the Ar Rayyis region, the western part of Saudi Arabia.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., a major South Korean plant builder, said Monday it has clinched a 780 billion-won ($707.8 million) deal to build a seawater desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.

ACCIONA completes construction of Al Khobar I desalination plant in KSA – Saudi Arabia

ACCIONA, the Spanish global developer and manager of sustainable infrastructure solutions, has announced that it has completed the construction of the Al Khobar I desalination plant in Saudi Arabia and that the plant is producing water beyond its nominal capacity since December 26, 2020.

In a statement, the company explained that the seawater desalination reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant, of high energy efficiency, is a key project in the modernisation program for the Kingdom’s water sector, which is currently being carried out by Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) of Saudi Arabia.
