Neom City is a futuristic city that the Saudi Arabian government plans to build in the country’s Tabuk region.

The $500 billion development will include a range of smart technologies and will serve as a “living laboratory and hub for innovation,” according to its planners. It will also be exclusively powered by renewable energy.

According to a new study by KAUST, renewables-powered desalination will play a key role in the city.

It will be critical to ensuring sustainable supplies of water through demand-side management (DSM).

SWPC has announced that request for proposals (RFP) has been issued to all prequalified bidders to participate in a competitive tender for the Rabigh-4 (IWP).

A total of 39 utility project developer consortiums, including 21 local firms, had expressed their interests in developing the key RO seawater desalination plant, which on completion, will boast a potable water capacity of 600,000 cu m/day.

NEOM to build renewable-powered desalination plant – Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s futuristic planned city NEOM plans to build a water desalination plant powered by renewable energy.

NEOM signed a MOU yesterday with the Japanese trading company Itochu and the French energy company Veolia to build a desalination facility powered completely from renewable energy.

NEOM plans for the facility to produce 500,000 cubic meters a day of water by early 2024, according to a press release.

ACCIONA starts operation and maintenance of Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant in Saudi Arabia

ACCIONA has started the operation and maintenance of SWPC Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant, one of the largest in Saudi Arabia serving two million people.

The O&M contract has been awarded for 25 years. The IWP uses SWRO technology, which is more energy efficient than conventional thermal desalination.

Shuqaiq 3 is a key project in the modernization of the water sector that is being carried out by the SWPC.

Construction begins on Jubail 3B Independent Water Project (IWP) plant by Acciona – Saudi Arabia

Together with its partner SEPCO III, ACCIONA has started the construction of the Jubail 3B IWP.

Its capacity of 570,000 cubic meter per day will supply 2 million people in the cities of Riyadh and Qassim once commercially operational in 2024.

ACCIONA and its partner are the main EPC contractors in the project, which will be developed and financed by a consortium consisting of ENGIE, NESMA and AJLAN for the publicly-owned SWPC.

Water companies bet on hydrogen to beat climate change – Saudi Arabia

The Saudi water sector is moving towards increasing its hydrogen production as companies try to find creative ways to tackle climate change.

“We are the main producers of water, which is the main source of hydrogen,” said Carlos Cosin.

Cosin made these remarks during an interview with Arab News at a conference for the desalination sector in Jeddah last month.

Saudi Arabia launches $666m water projects in Tabuk region – KSA

Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of 26 water, environmental and agricultural projects in the Tabuk region of the kingdom at a total cost of more than $667 million.

These projects, which include four desalination projects worth SR1 billion, and 5 projects for water transmission systems valued at SR1 billion.

In addition the governor also opened seven projects for developing water resources at a cost of SR100 million.

Construction begins on Jubail 3B IWP desalination project – Saudi Arabia

Construction work has commenced on the Jubail 3B IWP desalination plant that will be located 65km north of Dammam airport in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This followed a ground-breaking ceremony conducted by global energy company ENGIE.

Commissioned by SWPC, the Jubail 3B plant will produce 570,000 m3/day of potable water using RO technology.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to provide a one-billion-dollar investment guarantee to the federal government, which will be used to build a desalination plant in Karachi to address the city’s water supply problems.

Saudi Arabia Kicks off Implementation of World’s Largest Eco-friendly Water Osmosis System – Saudi Arabia

The Governor of the Saudi Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), Eng. Abdullah Al-Abdul Karim, said that work has begun to create the world’s largest environmentally friendly water osmosis system.

The Saudi official revealed the Kingdom’s aspirations to find solutions to the risks that threaten humanity, especially the increasing water demand.

His comments came during a speech at the opening of the Global Water Summit, which kicked off on Wednesday in Madrid.
