EWEC’s Taweelah desalination plant sets global record – UAE

Equivalent to 831,935 cubic meters per day, this achievement establishes Taweelah RO as the largest operational RO facility worldwide.

Once fully operational, Taweelah RO will supply 200 MIGD (909,200 cubic meters per day) of potable water.

Abu Dhabi’s Taweelah plant ‚world’s largest operating RO facility – UAE

It is Ewec’s fourth operational desalination plant with RO capacity, joining Mirfa 1, and the Fujairah F1 and Fujairah F2 hybrid water desalination and power plants. 

Ewec has also commissioned the development of four additional low-carbon intensive water production facilities, including Mirfa 2 RO, Shuweihat 4 RO, and two standalone RO water desalination plants as part of the Abu Dhabi Islands RO Independent Water Project.

UAE adds new water desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain at AED 2.2 billion cost – UAE

Umm Al Quwain’s new water desalination plant is now fully operational and producing 150 million gallons per day, having costed Dh2.2 billion.

Al Ali also highlighted the project’s aim to reduce energy consumption, with the facility covering an estimated area of 250,000 square meters and serving all areas under UWEC’s supervision.

Researchers are making desalination carbon neutral and more environmentally friendly – UAE

The process is energy-intensive and expensive, and it has a large environmental footprint. It produces greenhouse gases as well as concentrated salts, known as brine, which are pumped back into the oceans and are detrimental to the marine environment. For every litre of water produced, the process creates about 1.5 litres of brine. These factors limit the expansion of desalination and its ability to keep up with the rising demand for potable water in Gulf countries including the UAE.

EWEC recommends over 600% increase in total solar power capacity by 2030 – UAE

EWEC’s statement report also forecasts the need to proceed with the development of two low-carbon intensive RO desalination plants, Mirfa 2 Reverse Osmosis, which will have the capacity to produce 120MIGD of potable water, and the Shuweihat 4 Reverse Osmosis, with a production capacity of 70MIGD.
