Uruguay: Desalination plant arrives from United States to fight the water crisis

he purchase of the unit by the water-supplying company Obras Sanitarias de Estado (OSE) and the Technological University of Uruguay (Utec) had been announced on May 16 with a delivery date set for early June, but the plant did not fit in the airplane that was to carry it and therefore it had to be transported by ship.

The transaction was arranged for a price of US$ 120,000 through the Hydro Application Consulting Group.

The 250l/s reverse osmosis plant went to a consortium comprising La Peninsular Compañía Constructora and Acciona Agua, which has a 25-year concession to design, build and operate it. Another contract for the integral improvement of the distribution system went to a consortium comprising FCC Aqualia and Aqualia México for 1.3bn pesos, which now holds a 10-year concession to improve, operate and maintain the system.

The Charles E. Meyer Desalination Plant in Santa Barbara, California: A Key Solution to Improving Water Reliability and Resilience in Drought Years – US

To date, DWR has awarded over $82 million in Proposal 1 desalination grants ranging from over $100,000 to $10 million to support 20 projects. Three projects are currently under construction, including the Antioch Brackish Water Desalination Project, the City of Camarillo’s North Pleasant Valley Desalination Project, and the brackish desalter in the city of Santa Monica. Two of the projects will contribute to the Governor’s goal of increasing brackish groundwater desalination production by 28,000 acre-feet per year by 2030.
