The device is fundamentally a solar desalination machine that takes in salt water and heats it with natural sunlight. What makes the machine efficient is its ability to circulate water in swirling eddies similar to larger âthermohalineâ circulation that happens in the ocean. This movement, coupled with the heat of the sun, results in water evaporating and leaving the salt behind. The water vapor can then be collected and condensed to be used as pure drinking water.
âFor the first time, it is possible for water, produced by sunlight, to be even cheaper than tap water,â said co-author Lenan Zhang, a research scientist at MITâs Device Research Laboratory. The device would also last for several years before requiring replacement parts.

Last November, the California Coastal Commission approved a permit for a sprawling, $330 million seawater desalination facility in Marinaâa blue-collar city of 22,500 residents that is located about 15 minutes north of the more affluent community of Monterey. If approved, Cal-Amâs desalination plant would produce 4.8 million gallons of freshwater per day and would be the first seawater desalination plant constructed in California in nearly a decade.
These separation processes take a substantial amount of energy, accounting for roughly half of U.S. industrial energy use. Traditionally, molecular separations have relied on methods that require intensive heating and cooling that make them very energy inefficient.
Bechtel Energy and Five Point Energy announced an agreement that will allow Five Point to utilize Bechtelâs proprietary Low Energy Ejector Desalination System (LEEDS) technology to provide produced water desalination services to customers across the Permian Basin. This is proprietary water desalination technology that has never been used before and will be piloted in the Permian Basin.
