This megaproject should make it possible to strengthen and secure the drinking water supply to part of the Casablanca-Settat region. It must also supply desalinated water on behalf of another operator to serve the irrigation needs of a 5,000 ha area.

Barcelona already relies on Europe’s largest desalination plant for domestic use to compensate over three years of below average rainfall that have led to a historic drought made worse by climate change. In February, Catalonia’s regional government declared a drought emergency for much of the surrounding region.
Corpus Christi Water supplies water to about 500,000 people. It has four surface water sources, but they are dependent on rail and are all treated at a single plant. Drew Molly, its chief operating officer, said during the city council’s June 25 meeting that the desalination plant is needed to secure „a drought-proof water supply.”
As part of supporting displaced Palestinian families with potable water, the UAE has contributed to providing water in displacement camps and shelters in Khan Younis city. The project benefits 50,000 people, with 116,000 litres of water being filled daily.
Pending projects include improving the Costa del Sol-Malaga-Axarquia connection and extending the Pilones water treatment plant and its distribution network.
There are also plans to build a new desalination plant with a capacity of between 2,000 and 3,000 litres per second to distribute water across the Guadalhorce and the entire province.
Valued at $800 million, the contract for the construction and operation of a desalination plant in the capital Dakar was signed in March in the final days of Sall’s presidency.

ERM has launched offshore trials to test critical elements of its Dolphyn Hydrogen process. “Following six years of development, the trials are being conducted in a floating marine environment in Pembroke Port, South Wales,” said the sustainability consultancy. The Dolphyn Hydrogen process combines electrolysis, desalination, and hydrogen production on a floating wind platform. The system transports the hydrogen to shore via pipeline. It does not require an electrical connection.
“The studies that underlie and support policies and planning, namely the Hydrographic Region Management Plan – PGRH (3rd cycle-2022-2027), the Intermunicipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change – PIAAC and the Regional Water Efficiency Plan of Algarve – PREHA, either do not mention desalination or refer to it as the last of the measures to consider studying after the others eventually prove to be insufficient”, says the platform in a statement.
