The desalination project, hailed as one of the biggest private investments in the country, was signed by Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power and Senegal’s state water company SONES in the final days of Sall’s presidency.
Douglas OHI has begun the construction of temporary office facilities and essential utility infrastructure for the Ghubrah 3 Desalination Plant in Oman. The groundbreaking is said to signal the commencement of construction activities, and marks a significant milestone in the journey toward realising the project, which – once complete – will be the largest desalination plant in Oman,
The Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has received bids from at least three groups for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build the planned 1 million cubic metre a day (cm/d) Jubail 2 desalination plant. For the 600,000 cm/d Shuaiba 5 desalination plant, SWCC awarded a contract to the local Rawafid and Advanced Water Technology (AWT) to build the 600,000 cm/d Shuaiba 5 desalination plant.
The plant is commissioned by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and ACWA Power and will cost US $320 million. It will be the second largest desalination plant based on reverse osmosis (RO) technology in the world, and the largest desalination plant powered by solar energy.
Currently having 9 seawater desalination stations operational or under construction, Morocco will launch, in 2023, work on three new infrastructures on the Atlantic coast. According to recent statements from Nizar Baraka, Casablanca, El Jadida and Safi will soon have their stations. The goal is to achieve production of one billion cubic meters by 2030.
It’s among the points more hotly contended between opponents and supporters of the proposed project, which would in its initial phase have the capacity to generate as much as 30 million gallons of treated water per day.
This megaproject should make it possible to strengthen and secure the drinking water supply to part of the Casablanca-Settat region. It must also supply desalinated water on behalf of another operator to serve the irrigation needs of a 5,000 ha area.
The research team led by Zhang Xuan, a professor at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology, developed the polyester reverse osmosis membrane, which overcame several limitations of mainstream commercial polyamide membranes, providing a new solution for the next generation of seawater desalination technology.
“I am thrilled that our region will receive this critical funding to support our water infrastructure,” said Levin, a Democrat wo represents the 49th District. “In the face of threats from climate change, these projects are essential for ensuring a sustainable and resilient water supply for our communities.”
Wabag had constructed this 8 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant over 10 years back and was responsible for the O&M of the plant until 2018.
