A top commander in the Israeli army has written to the United Nations to warn that the Gaza Strip is on the brink of a water and electricity crisis.

Major General Yoav Mordechai, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) coordinator of government activities in the Palestinian Territories, sent letters to several international bodies including the UN’s special envoy for the Middle East peace process, to say that urgent action is needed to prevent the situation for civilians from deteriorating (LINK).

Die Insel verfügt über eine hydraulische Infrastruktur von 242 Dämmen, Dutzende von Mikro-Dämmen, etwa 2.420 Aquädukte (Netzwerk von über 22.000 Kilometer Wasserleitungen/Rohre), fast 70 Wasseraufbereitungsanlagen und zahlreiche Pumpstationen. Die seit Jahren herrschende Dürre verursacht einen Mangel der Wasserressourcen, die 242 Dämme weisen aktuell ein kumuliertes Gesamtvolumen von nur noch 38 Prozent auf.

Meerwasserentsalzung ist die Gewinnung von Trinkwasser und Betriebswasser für Industrie- oder Kraftwerksanlagen aus Meerwasser durch die Verringerung des Salzgehaltes. Die Entsalzung kann auf verschiedenen Prozessen beruhen, die Salze und Mineralien aus dem Wasser entfernen. (LINK)

A new UNICEF seawater desalination plant is providing safe tap water to southern Gaza Strip

In January, UNICEF and partners completed the construction of a €10 million seawater desalination plant funded by the European Union. It will initially produce 6,000 cubic metres of safe drinking water a day, providing it to 75,000 people living in the southern Gaza Strip – about 35,000 people in Khan Younis and 40,000 people in Rafah.
