Tender for new Paphos (Cyprus) desalination plant in summer

A tender competition is to be announced in the summer for the construction of a new desalination plant in Paphos, acting head of the Water Development Department (WDD) Andreas Manoli said on Thursday.

The Cabinet gave the go-ahead on Wednesday for the construction of a desalination unit with a daily capacity of 15,000 cubic metres. The unit is to be built in Kouklia, in the same location where a mobile desalination unit had been installed in 2010, which is now being dismantled.

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität Duisburg/Essen, der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Membrantechnik (DGMT) bietet DME GmbH im Juni 2017 das Seminar:

Im Rahmen ausgewählter Vorträge geben Experten Einblick in den Stand der Technik, Forschungsaktivitäten, betriebene Membrananlagen, Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten der Technologien und regulatorische und rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen.

Neben dem gezielten Blick auf die Entferenung von störenden Inhaltsstoffen wird auch der Umgang mit gerade diesen dann entstehenden Konzentraten technisch und rechtlich betratet werden.

Trinkwasser aus der Wüstenluft – Metallorganischer Werkstoff mit extrem großer innerer Ober­fläche ent­wickelt.

Extrem poröse Verbindungen aus Metalloxiden und organischen Salzen verfügen über bis zu 7000 Quadrat­metern Ober­fläche pro Gramm. Die künst­lich hergestellten metall­organischen Gerüste – kurz MOF vom englischen metall-organic framework – gelten daher als vielversprechende Materialien für die Trennung von Gasen, sowie für Batterieelektroden oder Katalysatoren. Eine Forschergruppe um Omar Yaghi vom Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory entwarf jetzt ein MOF-Material zur Gewinnung von Trinkwasser. Selbst bei einer geringen Luftfeuchte von zwanzig Prozent, die beispielsweise in der Sahara herrscht, war ein Prototyp effizient genug, um einige Liter Wasser in einer Nacht sammeln zu können.

A joint venture between a division of Italy’s Salini Impregilo and Spain’s Abengoa has signed a $225m agreement with ACWA Power for the development of a desalination plant in Shuaiba, Saudi Arabia.

The Salini unit, Fisia Italimpianti, and Abenoga will design and build the plant for ACWA Power on behalf of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation, the Saudi state-owned water utility company.

Located in the Shuaiba area on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, the plant will use reverse osmosis technology to deliver up to 250,000m3 of water per day, and supply potable water to more than one million residents in the cities of Mecca, Jeddah and Taif.

Atmospheric water is a resource equivalent to ~10% of all fresh water in lakes on Earth. However, an efficient process for capturing and delivering water from air, especially at low humidity levels (down to 20%), has not been developed. Such desalination projects are operational in cities like Dubai and Chennai. The desalination proposal was meant to tide over poor rains in the catchment of the dams which supply water to Mumbai.
