Chilean miner Antofagasta Minerals on Thursday inaugurated a more than $2 billion desalination plant for its flagship copper mine in Chile, Los Pelambres, aimed at relieving the effects of severe drought that has hit production.
The mine is the first to operate with desalinated water in an area of the country that has suffered a 15-year drought, sucking water from reservoirs and sparking concern over the fresh water supply.
The XPRIZE Foundation, a California nonprofit that designs and hosts public competitions intended to encourage technology development, has announced launch of a five-year global effort that will provide a total of $119 million in funding for new approaches to address water scarcity through sustainable seawater desalination.Â

âThe first phase will be operational in June 2025, injecting 50,000 m3Â per day into the network,â Thiam said, adding that the projectâs social aspect, supporting local professionals in fisheries and agriculture sectors as part of the corporate social responsibility initiatives associated with the desalination project.

With a capacity of 150 million gallons of desalinated water per day, the plant operates according to the independent producer system.

The Complex is one of the key pillars for supplying Dubai with electricity and water services, adhering to the highest standards of availability, reliability, and quality. DEWA had awarded the implementation of the AED897 million plant, with a production capacity of 40 million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD) of desalinated water, to a consortium led by Spainâs Acciona Agua and Belhasa Six Construct (BeSIX).
Algerian Irrigation Minister Taha Derbal, who visited one of the projects on Sunday, announced that all the plants would be completed by the end of 2024.
