The desalination plant will produce 16 million cubic metres of fresh water, which means more than 20% of the Algarve’s public supply needs, estimated at 72 million cubic metres, says Águas do Algarve.
The project also includes the mobilization of 35 million m³ of treated desalinated water per year for industrial use, of which 75 million m³ will be allocated to public services and 35 million m³ to the OCP industry. Four desalination units will be set up, including two located in Jorf Lasfar and two others in Safi.
Water and wastewater management specialist Metito engineered, designed, developed, and commissioned the floating desalination barges for its client, the Saudi National Shipping Company (Bahri). A total of three barges, 50,000m3/d each, secured the project the title of the largest operating plant of its kind in the world.
Developed by a consortium composed of Marubeni and Transelec, the SADDN project includes the intake and outfall systems of the desalination plant, a 160 km pipeline and three pumping stations that will elevate the desalinated water to roughly 3,000 meters above sea level. This is the first phase of a larger desalination plant that will ultimately reach a design capacity of 1,956 lps (roughly 170,000 m3/day).
The European Investment Bank has agreed to invest more than $86,5 million in Djibouti through water desalination and wastewater treatment.
According to official sources, Puducherry is currently dependent on over 100 deep tube-wells in the urban and peripheral areas for the city’s day-to-day water needs. As many as 220 million litres of water are supplied through pipelines to overhead reservoirs located in the urban limits. With water being extracted for over 16 to 20 hours per day to meet the rising demand, the quality of water has started deteriorating over a period. As a result, various parameters such as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, nitrate, iron, and chloride have increased over the permissible levels.

A „drought“ decree, adopted in March 2023 by the Italian government, provides for the easing of regulations surrounding the construction of desalinators. Below a production rate of 200 liters per second, these facilities will no longer be subject to an environmental impact assessment. Only the criterion of having a proven water shortage in the area they are to serve will be maintained. Meanwhile, the will no longer be a need for distribution network optimization.
Situated on the southeastern coast of Bahrain, the plant currently boasts production of 16.3 million imperial gallons of potable water per day.
