Morocco speeds up desalination projects as drought persists

Dam filling rate has dropped to 23% in Morocco on average in November with some critical dams such as Al Massira- supplying Casablanca- completely depleted.

Construction works for the biggest desalination plant in Casablanca would start next year. It will be able to pump fresh water by 2027, according to the water ministry.

The Casablanca desalination plant will have a capacity of 300 cubic meters, enough to ensure water security of Morocco’s largest city and its surroundings.

V&A Waterfront to commission R184m desalination plant early 2024 – Cape Town, SA

JSE-listed Growthpoint Properties and the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), equal joint owners of the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront in Cape Town, will be commissioning a R184 million desalination plant in the precinct in March and April next year.

At full capacity, it will enable the Waterfront to go off the water grid.

David Green, the chief executive of the V&A Waterfront, confirmed the desalination plant is scalable and could provide between 3.5 million and five million litres of water per day.

Carlsbad Desalination Project – San Diego, California

The plant produces 50 million gallons of desalinated seawater (MGD) a day and provide 10% of the total drinking water needed by San Diego. It supplies 56,000 acre-feet (approximately 2,440 cubic feet) of water a year, sufficient for 300,000 people.

UI Students Win Gold Medal Thanks to Innovation in Desalination Technology to Overcome Water Crisis – Jakarta

The results of this research are outlined in a scientific work entitled „GO-FILTER: Sea Water Desalination Based on Graphene Oxide as a Water Treatment Innovation in Jakarta“. “Currently, increasing water pollution in Jakarta is starting to trigger a water crisis. In some areas, groundwater can no longer be an alternative water source due to land subsidence and sea water intrusion in Jakarta. Utilizing seawater as Jakarta’s water source using the desalination method has emerged as an alternative solution. „However, this method requires quite large costs and the reverse osmosis process and multistage distillation method leads to an increase in greenhouse gases,“ said […]

MOROCCO: Essaouira and Guelmim are betting on desalination for water supply

According to the Moroccan public company, these studies will make it possible to determine the needs in drinking water and irrigation, as well as the resources already mobilised in the cities of Essaouira and Guelmim. The sites for the future plants will also be identified and their surface areas determined.
