PUB and research partner to reduce energy consumption of seawater desalination. To meet Singapore’s water needs and reduce the energy costs of treating seawater, national water agency PUB and its research partner Evoqua Water have announced a new process that can potentially reduce the energy consumption of seawater desalination by half. Currently, up to 30 per cent of Singapore’s water needs is desalinated by reverse osmosis, a process which pushes seawater through membranes that filter out dissolved salts and minerals. (LINK). Imran offers garbage-fuelled desalination plant to Karachi. Imran Khan proposed to solve Karachi’s garbage problem by using it to generate electricity, simultaneously powering a desalination plant for overcoming the water shortage in the city. He made this declaration soon after PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari promised to convert Karachi into a model South Asian city. Speaking with media persons here, he said: “My dream of New Pakistan cannot be realized until and unless I develop this city,” he said. (LINK). Status quo extended on Nemmeli plant’s tender. The Madras High Court has extended till July 10 the operation of the status quo ordered earlier, in the matter of calling for tenders for setting up an 150-MLD sea water desalination plant in Nemmeli on the East Coast Road. Justice T Raja granted the extension while passing interim orders on a plea by Singh Electricals and Constructions seeking to quash tender notification issued by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board in 2016. State of Hawaii Secures $2 Million in Federal Funding for Solar Desalination Development. KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII—The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) is set to receive a $2 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) to advance solar-thermal desalination technologies, which can reduce cost and expand the market for creating freshwater from otherwise unusable waters. The project at NELHA will demonstrate improvements to thermal desalination technologies and low-cost integrated designs for solar-thermal collection and storage to reduce the cost of desalination at its Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park (HOST Park) on the Island of Hawaii. Wadi Dayqah water project to go ahead this year. An ambitious plan to harness the prodigious water capacity of the Wadi Dayqah reservoir in Muscat Governorate is back on track, with the state-owned Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) set to launch an international competitive tender for this unique project. Envisaged is an Independent Water Project (IWP) of a capacity ranging from 90,000 to 125,000 cubic metres /day (equivalent to 20 – 27.5 million imperial gallons per day MIGD) that will tap the Wadi Dayqah reservoir— the largest surface water resource in the Sultanate — to supply potable and irrigational water to parts of the capital […] Wadi Dayqah water project to go ahead this year.DME GmbH2018-07-03T02:17:58+02:00
Antifouling membranes for single-step desalination. A filter for water purification that can replace, with a single step, the complex, time-consuming and multi-stage processes currently needed, has been developed by a team from CSIRO Manufacturing (Sydney, Australia; www.csiro.au), led by Dong Han Seo. The team has demonstrated water desalination via a membrane distillation (MD) process using a graphene membrane, called graphair. Water permeation is enabled by nanochannels of multilayer, mismatched, partially overlapping graphene grains. (LINK). HC to decide fate of tender for desalination plant. The Madras High Court would decide on Tuesday the fate of a tender floated by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) in November 2016 inviting international bids for designing, building and maintaining for 20 years, a 150 million litres per day (MLD) desalination plant, based on Sea Water Reverse Osmosis at Nemmili on East Coast Road here. Justice T. Raja has posted a writ petition that sought for quashing the 2016 tender notification for final hearing on Tuesday and directed CMWSSB to maintain status quo till then. Ensenada desalination plant to start operations on July 9. With an investment of 880.4 million pesos and after months of delay, the Ensenada desalination plant will finally start operations on Monday, July 9, supplying 250 liters per second to the local population. The director of the Aguas de Ensenada company, Moisés Pariente, reported that they are currently in the testing period and in the coming weeks some adjustments will be made to the process so the processed water meets the standards required, before sending it to the tank locate at El Gallo, which is the delivery point. Day Zero is called off for now, but restrictions retained. Dam levels have been rising “consistently” and “significantly”, Ian Neilson, Deputy Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town, said at a media briefing on Thursday, 28 June 2018. Over the past few weeks, the drought-stricken city has been receiving a healthy amount of winter rain and Day Zero has been cancelled for this year and 2019. According to the city, dam levels are sitting at just over 43%, with two more months of winter rainfall expected. In comparison, at the end of winter last year dam levels were at just 38%. High-water mark for new Tuas plant. The Tuas Desalination Plant is the world’s most space efficient in terms of the amount of water it can purify for its size, said national water agency PUB. At 3.5ha, it is the smallest of the country’s desalination facilities, yet it produces 30 million gallons of drinking water a day, the same amount as SingSpring Desalination Plant, which is almost double its size. It took two years to build and opened officially yesterday. And now that it is running, 30 per cent of Singapore’s water supply can be met through desalination. (LINK).
