Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), the sole procurer and supplier of water and electricity in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, announced on Tuesday that it has received four proposals for the development and operation of a 60 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD), equivalent to 273,000 cubic metres per day (m3/day) sea water desalination project located on Saadiyat Island.
A crucial point, because the use of seawater and brackish water desalination is exploding worldwide, and this process is often far from being an ecological solution. Thus, in a note published in September 2022 , two specialists from Ifri (French Institute of International Relations) write that in 2022, „more than 21,000 seawater desalination plants are operational worldwide, almost twice as many as ten years ago, and the sector is experiencing growth of around +6% to +12% in capacity per year.“
UAE’s Emirates and Water Electricity Company (EWEC) has issued a request for proposals for the development of the Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) project. This will be a carbon-capture-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant located in the Al Taweelah Power and Desalination Complex, around 50 kilometres to the North East of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Douglas OHI has begun the construction of temporary office facilities and essential utility infrastructure for the Ghubrah 3 Desalination Plant in Oman. MCWD and PWRI held an inauguration ceremony on July 31, marking the start of the desalination plant’s operation that is set on August 1, 2024, Daluz said.
The facility converts brackish waters from the sea into fresh and potable water for the MCWD consumer.
