Interdisciplinary research on freezing of waste water
Research into the freezing of waste water recently received funding from the Academy of Finland. The name of the research project is WINICE (Wastewater treatment by natural freeze crystallization and ice separation). The duration of the project is three years, 2015-2017.

the researchers developed a self-heating carbon nanotube-based membrane that only heats the brine at the membrane surface. The new system reduced the heat needed in the process and increased the yield of recovered water to close to 100 percent.

Victorian Minister for Water Lisa Neville said, “The plant was not built to be turned on just when our water supply reached critical levels. Instead its aim is to make sure that our water supply doesn’t fall to those levels in the first place.

“No one’s water bills will increase due to this water order. There will be no additional charges for this year’s water orders – or the minimum water orders of 15GL for the next three years – passed onto consumers.”

Sumitomo Corporation Participates in Water Concession Business in Brazil

Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kuniharu Nakamura; hereafter „Sumitomo“) announced today that it is investing alongside Brookfield Business Partners L.P. (*1) and institutional clients of Brookfield Asset Management (*2) in a 70% controlling stake in 26 project companies involved in water and sewage services and industrial water treatment owned by Odebrecht Ambiental („OA“) (*3). OA is Brazil’s largest private water distribution, collection and treatment company. Sumitomo will invest approximately US$250million, which represents a 14% stake in the 26 project companies.

South Africa goes the desalination route to fight water shortage

Government says it has launched the largest desalination plant in the country. Richards Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast is the first recipient of the government programme.

It will see about 150 000 households as well as water-intensive and smelter companies benefiting from the R300 million plant.

The desalination process, converting salty seawater to drinkable water, is seen as a game changer for drought-stricken communities in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
