THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) is set to implement a P100 million pipe-laying project in preparation for the additional 75,000 cubic meters of water supply from the desalination plants in Cordova town, and Barangays Marigondon and Canjulao in Lapu-Lapu City.

During the âKapihan sa PIAâ organized by the Public Information Agency in Central Visayas Wednesday, March 15, 2023, John Macabinta, Corporate Planning Department acting manager of the government-owned and -controlled utility provider, said 70 percent of the water supply sourced by MCWD comes from below the ground, while the rest comes from surface waters like rivers and reservoirs.

Facilities have an uninterruptible supply of potable water using solar-powered Finnish desalination technology.
Last Dec. 28, MCWD signed a 25-year desalinated bulk water supply contract with Pilipinas Water Resources Inc. (PWRI) and 8990 Housing Development Corp. Joint Venture (JV) for the delivery of water.
The P20.7 billion contract is expected to deliver 10,000 cubic meters (cbm) of water daily in the first year, and then 25,000 cbm per day for the remaining 24 years of the contract.
AIC has submitted an unsolicited proposal to supply the Metro Cebu Water District (MWCD) with 30 million liters per day of desalinated bulk water. It intends to utilize Keppel Infrastructureâs expertise and technologies in building and operating a desalination plant in the province wherein raw saltwater will be treated using the reverse osmosis water treatment technology to produce safe drinking water.

âBy the end of October, we will be signing (the contract) and the actual construction of the 30 MLD (millions of liter per day) desalination plant in Barangay Marigondon will start,â said MCWD chairman Jose Daluz III in a mix of Cebuano and English on Monday, September 19, 2022.
Daluz said the MCWD is looking for other sources of water, including the 20 MLD desalination plant of Vivant Hydrocore Holdings Inc. in Cordova town.
He said they also hope to start construction of a 25 MLD desalination plant in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu [âŠ]
