New way to recover almost 100 percent of the water from highly concentrated salt solutions

…

the researchers developed a self-heating carbon nanotube-based membrane that only heats the brine at the membrane surface. The new system reduced the heat needed in the process and increased the yield of recovered water to close to 100 percent.

In addition to the significantly improved desalination performance, the team also investigated how the application of alternating currents to the membrane heating element could prevent degradation of the carbon nanotubes in the saline environment. Specifically, a threshold frequency was identified where electrochemical oxidation of the nanotubes was prevented, allowing the nanotube films to be operated for significant lengths of […]

„Akademik Lomonossow“, Russlands erstes schwimmendes Atomkraftwerk auch für Meerwasserentsalzung

…

Membraneless water filtration using CO2

…

show an alternative membraneless method for separating suspended particles by exposing the colloidal suspension to CO2. Dissolution of CO2 into the suspension creates solute gradients that drive phoretic motion of particles. Due to the large diffusion potential generated by the dissociation of carbonic acid, colloidal particles move either away from or towards the gas–liquid interface depending on their surface charge. Using the directed motion of particles induced by exposure to CO2, we demonstrate a scalable, continuous flow, membraneless particle filtration process that exhibits low energy consumption, three orders of magnitude lower than conventional microfiltration/ultrafiltration processes, and is essentially […]

Alfa Laval create s a Food & Water competence centre outside of Copenhagen, Denmark

Alfa Laval’s site in Søborg will over the coming one and half years, shift focus from manufacturing to sales, research & development and engineering & supply. A new testing facility will also be established. The shift away from manufacturing means that Alfa Laval, by the end of 2017 will have moved the production of its ballast water treatment system – Alfa Laval PureBallast – to the existing facility in Aalborg, Denmark.

Von Salzwasser zu Süsswasser: LANXESS hat Multi-Ionen Feeds im Griff

…

World’s first commercial full-recovery desalination plant completed in El Paso

Enviro Water Minerals Company celebrated the completion of its new facility during a ribbon-cutting event on the Eastside. The plant will add to the city’s drinking water supply and turn minerals from groundwater into commercial products.

“By allowing our city to conserve over 700 million gallons of water a year, the new EWM facility will help provide El Paso with a greater supply of drinkable water for years to come,” Mayor Oscar Leeser said in a statement. “It will also play a critical role in ensuring that El Paso can continue to grow and improve in a way that […]

Carbon nanostructures supplied by Lockheed Martin are special; they are networked

….

The group has leveraged the electrically conductive nature of a special kind of nanofiber, called carbon nanotubes (CNT). CNTs are tiny cylindrical tubes made of tightly bonded carbon atoms, measuring just one atom thick. But the CNTs Dr. Hashaikeh’s team used, which were provided by global security, aerospace, and information technology company Lockheed Martin, are not ordinary CNTs.

“The carbon nanostructures supplied by Lockheed Martin are special; they are networked. This means that they are composed of many interconnecting channels that branch off in all directions. This interconnectivity is what enables the entire membrane to become completely cleaned […]

Water harvesting from air with metal-organic frameworks powered by natural sunlight

Abstract:
Atmospheric water is a resource equivalent to ~10% of all fresh water in lakes on Earth. However, an efficient process for capturing and delivering water from air, especially at low humidity levels (down to 20%), has not been developed. We report the design and demonstration of a device based on porous metal-organic framework-801 [Zr6O4(OH)4(fumarate)6] that captures water from the atmosphere at ambient conditions using low-grade heat from natural sunlight below one sun (1 kW per square meter). This device is capable of harvesting 2.8 liters of water per kilogram of MOF daily at relative humidity levels as low […]
