City of Cape Town progresses with plans for permanent desalination plant – South Africa

IN the face of climate change, unpredictable rainfall and a growing population, the City’s plans for a permanent desalination plant is a key project in the City’s New Water Programme (NWP) and Water Strategy, which aims to diversify drinking water supply resources.

The desalination project is expected to produce 50 to 70-million litres of water a day by 2030.

Overall, the City aims to add an extra 300-million litres of water per day from various sources, including desalination, water reuse, groundwater and clearing of alien invasive species.

Point Lisas Desalination Plant to undergo maintenance – Trinidad and Tobago

This was confirmed in a statement by WASA on Wednesday morning.

The Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago – DESALCOTT owned and operated Plant, normally supplies WASA with 40 million gallons of water per day (mgd); however, this has been reduced to 26 mgd, due to emergency maintenance work on the filter system at the facility.

The work is expected to be completed by midnight on Friday and the plant restored to full production on Saturday.

Assessment of salt-free electrodialysis metathesis: A novel process for brine management in brackish water desalination using monovalent selective ion exchange membranes – USA

Since reverse osmosis (RO) is often limited to a water recovery of 70–85 %, implementing a secondary process like electrodialysis metathesis (EDM) to treat concentrate can increase system water recovery. This study explores salt-free electrodialysis metathesis (SF-EDM) as an alternative to conventional EDM to investigate its performance in the zero discharge desalination (ZDD) process. SF-EDM utilizes monovalent-selective ion exchange membranes, eliminating the need for sodium chloride (NaCl) as a substitution solution.

Morocco mobile desalination units quench remote areas‘ thirst -Morocco

Since 2023, Morocco has built some 44 of these desalination stations, also called „monobloc“ — compact, transportable units that have come as a boon against the increasingly tangible effects of climate change.

The potable water is distributed with tanker trucks to remote areas in the country, currently grappling with its worst drought in nearly 40 years.

Senegal scraps water desalination deal with Saudi firm ACWA Power – Senegal

Senegal will cancel a 32-year water infrastructure deal that was signed by former president Macky Sall with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power company due to its high cost, the minister of water and sanitation said.

Valued at $800 million, the contract for the construction and operation of a desalination plant in the capital Dakar was signed in March in the final days of Sall’s presidency.

Touted as the largest project of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, the plant’s production capacity of 400,000 cubic meters per day was intended to alleviate shortages in a […]
