In response to the water shortages which have plagued the Western Cape throughout summer the owner of the Engen False Bay 1Stop has built his own desalination plant to ensure that his customers have purified water.

Kobus Pretorius, who is the Engen False Bay 1Stop situated 10km outside of Somerset West, says that as a responsible business owner operating a time when water shortages and the urgency to save water to prevent Day Zero were a reality he had to do something about it.

Cyclone Mekunu shuts Salalah seawater desalination plant.

Oman on Sunday advised all private sector establishments in Dhofar region to shut down for three days after Cyclone Mekunu hit the southern part of the Gulf Arab country, causing extensive damage that halted operations at Salalah port.

The labour ministry declared a three-day holiday for companies and establishments in the private sector, state news agency ONA reported on Sunday.

Seawater desalination plant in Zarat to be commissioned early 2021 (SONEDE CEO)

The construction works of the seawater desalination plant in Zarat (Gabes) will start by the end of 2018 and the station will be commissioned at the beginning of 2021, announced CEO of the National Water Distribution Utility (SONEDE) Mesbah Helali.

SONEDE has launched, over the last ten years a project to improve the quality of water in southern Tunisia.

The project consists of reducing salinity to a rate of 1.5 grams per liter, compared to more than 2 grams in all regions and localities where the population is over 4,000 inhabitants.

Aquaporin A/S, developer of biomimetic membranes for industrial and consumer water applications, has announced that it has formally signed a joint development agreement with Berghof Membrane Technology GmbH, leading manufacturer of tubular membranes for the filtration and separation of industrial process streams and wastewater.

The agreement initiates commercial efforts, wherein both companies will leverage their respective expertise in forward osmosis (FO) and tubular membrane technologies, to launch products targeted for high-strength industrial wastewater and food and beverage process streams.

First solar powered desalination plant launched in South Africa.

The first highly cost-effective solar powered desalination plant in South Africa will be commissioned by the end of October 2018 at Witsand, Hessequa Municipality, Western Cape.
The project was initiated by Prof. Erwin Schwella, Professor of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch and Tilburg Universities with the Municipality of Hessequa.
