Catalonia allows private desalination plants – Spain

Last month, the hotels pooled resources together and bought a mobile desalination plant worth 1.5 million euros, however, they still needed official permission by the authorities in order to operate it.

The desalination plant would extract water from under the beach rather than from the sea. It has a capacity of 50 cubic metres per hour and could be ready to be operational in May.

Algarve desalination costs almost double – Portugal

n the early days, Águas do Algarve talked about the project costing “around €50 million”. That figure is now €90 million – the funding of which is to be covered by recovery and resilience funding (RRP) from Brussels.

The plan envisages an initial capacity for conversion of seawater into drinking/irrigation water of 16 cubic hectometres (meaning 16 million cubic metres).

In a statement, Águas do Algarve said the project – due for completion by the end of 2026 – will be prepared to increase capacity to 24 cubic hectometres per year.

Critical issues of desalination plants on the islands – Sicily

Water is a common good but at a high price for the smaller islands. The study “Environmental and economic costs of desalination” was illustrated in the Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies with a case study on the smaller Sicilian islands:
‱ the average cost of producing desalinated water from fixed plants is around 12 euros/m3;
‱ the Lipari and Lampedusa plants consume energy for 2.8 million euros per year, with total annual management costs exceeding 12 million euros to produce 1.5 million m3/year of water.
