Seawater Desalination System to Address Water Supply Issues in Sabah – Borneo

Jetama Sdn Bhd (JSB), a subsidiary of Sabah Development Berhad (SDB) under the State Ministry of Finance, is leading efforts to tackle water supply challenges in Sabah with a new seawater desalination system.

Showcased at the Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (CAFEO 42), held from October 22 to 24 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), the system can desalinate seawater into reverse osmosis (RO) water suitable for industrial use. Through this innovative solution, treated industrial water can be redirected to local communities to ease domestic water shortages.

Axarquía desalination plant output will be shared equally between agricutural and domestic supply – Spain

The Axarquía desalination plant, costing 100 million euros, is set to split its output equally between agriculture and domestic supply. Managed by the state-owned Acuamed, the project advances largely due to user-driven demand rather than governmental speed, with 2028 as the earliest anticipated commissioning date. The Junta de Andalucía and Vélez-Málaga town hall have proposed a site near the coast, though expropriation is required from six landowners. Once operational, the plant will supply 12 cubic hectometres per year each for agricultural and household use, vital for addressing the region’s ongoing drought challenges.

Desalination at Reculver (Kent) – UK

Our strategy is closely aligned with the regional plan developed by Water Resources South East (WRSE), focused on securing water resources and distribution for a growing population across the South East region for the next 50 years.

Both plans provide a framework to meet increased water demand, achieved by reducing consumption and leakage, alongside significant investments in new infrastructure.

This comprehensive regional solution will secure the necessary water supply to protect the environment, enhance resilience, and support sustainable growth for the region.

Key actions include:

Kiewit to build Inner Harbor desalination plant in Texas – USA

The City of Corpus Christi,a coastal city in the South Texas region of the U.S. state of Texas, has selected Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. to lead the design and construction of its first-ever desalination facility, the Inner Harbor Seawater Desalination Treatment Plant.

“This is a significant milestone, one of the most important for the community, as it demonstrates our commitment to securing additional water resources for Corpus Christi and the surrounding areas,“ said City Manager Peter Zanoni.

Desalination measures set to tackle Cyprus’ water shortage – Cyprus

“It is important for Cyprus to proceed with purchase of its own mobile desalination units since the problem of drought will not be going away,” the minister added.

Water in the island’s reservoirs, mainly used for irrigation, now stands at a critical 27 per cent full, Water Development Department head George Kazantzis said on Sunday.

Currently the established plants are running at their maximum capacity. During the 2018 drought, Cyprus had also used additional mobile desalination as a stopgap measure, using leased units.

City of Cape Town progresses with plans for permanent desalination plant – South Africa

IN the face of climate change, unpredictable rainfall and a growing population, the City’s plans for a permanent desalination plant is a key project in the City’s New Water Programme (NWP) and Water Strategy, which aims to diversify drinking water supply resources.

The desalination project is expected to produce 50 to 70-million litres of water a day by 2030.

Overall, the City aims to add an extra 300-million litres of water per day from various sources, including desalination, water reuse, groundwater and clearing of alien invasive species.

Greece Looks to Tackle Water Shortages with New Desalination Plants on Islands – Greece

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy has approved temporary licenses for the development of five desalination plants across four Greek islands, marking a significant step in addressing water shortages.

In response to ongoing water scarcity issues, the Greek government has issued a record total of 25 temporary licenses for desalination plants since the beginning of the year. The new licenses pertain to the islands of Alonissos, Kalymnos, Pserimos and Telendos.

Point Lisas Desalination Plant to undergo maintenance – Trinidad and Tobago

This was confirmed in a statement by WASA on Wednesday morning.

The Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago – DESALCOTT owned and operated Plant, normally supplies WASA with 40 million gallons of water per day (mgd); however, this has been reduced to 26 mgd, due to emergency maintenance work on the filter system at the facility.

The work is expected to be completed by midnight on Friday and the plant restored to full production on Saturday.

Competitive water adsorption for low-energy desalination: Insights from statistical physics theory – Tunisia

… the statistical physics theory has been deployed to unlock the mysteries of water molecule binding on Zeolite and Silica Gel at the microscopic level. The adopted computational procedure, based on the grand canonical partition function, provided physical insights of the docking mechanism by scrutinizing the stereographic and energetic variables.

Assessment of salt-free electrodialysis metathesis: A novel process for brine management in brackish water desalination using monovalent selective ion exchange membranes – USA

Since reverse osmosis (RO) is often limited to a water recovery of 70–85 %, implementing a secondary process like electrodialysis metathesis (EDM) to treat concentrate can increase system water recovery. This study explores salt-free electrodialysis metathesis (SF-EDM) as an alternative to conventional EDM to investigate its performance in the zero discharge desalination (ZDD) process. SF-EDM utilizes monovalent-selective ion exchange membranes, eliminating the need for sodium chloride (NaCl) as a substitution solution.
