Critical issues of desalination plants on the islands – Sicily
Water is a common good but at a high price for the smaller islands. The study âEnvironmental and economic costs of desalinationâ was illustrated in the Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies with a case study on the smaller Sicilian islands:
⢠the average cost of producing desalinated water from fixed plants is around 12 euros/m3;
⢠the Lipari and Lampedusa plants consume energy for 2.8 million euros per year, with total annual management costs exceeding 12 million euros to produce 1.5 million m3/year of water.
