Finance ministry officials have revealed that a foreign company specialising in solar-powered desalination systems is already working on a project to install approximately 1,500 units of such plants in the southern part of Bangladesh. Through this project, around 50,000 coastal communities will gain access to safe drinking water.

State drops water desalination project in Coast due to high cost – Bangladesh

A plan to set up a large-scale water desalination plant in Indian Ocean has been shelved because it is costly.

Coast Water Works Development Agency (CWWDA) said it had abandoned the project and was exploring other ways to address the perennial water crisis affecting the six counties.

CWWDA said it supplies about 180,000 cubic metres of water to Coast region’s population of 4.329 million people against the demand of 329,306 cubic metres.
