Japanese materials manufacturer Toray Industries will build a new plant to make water treatment membranes in China, doubling its production capacity in a country facing water shortages.

The new plant is estimated to be a 10 billion yen ($89.7 million) investment, and will be built in Foshan, Guangdong Province.

It is to begin producing reverse osmosis membranes in 2021.

Kinmen County completes desalination plant expansion – Kinmen – China

Taiwan’s outlying Kinmen County celebrated on Monday the completion of an expansion of a local desalination plant that should help increase freshwater supplies and ease the threat of water shortages in the island county.

Mitsui to build desalination plant for BHP’s Spence copper mine in Chile.

Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. confirmed Thursday it has been selected to build a desalination plant for BHP’s (ASX, NYSE:BHP) Spence copper mine in Chile, as part of a $2.5 billion mine expansion approved earlier this year and which will add another 50 years to the operation’s productive life.

Mitsui will build the plant at Mejillones port, about 60 km north of Antofagasta city, through a joint venture with TĂ©cnicas de DesalinazaciĂłn de Aguas (Tedagua), a unit of Spain’s ACS Group with strengths in water-related business, it said.
