Perur desal plant delayed; no new bids – Chennai

Metrowater’s 400MLD desalination plant at Perur near Nemmeli is yet to materialize.

Tenders seeking to build the plant were called in 2020 but, an RTI reply has revealed, a contractor has not been chosen in the last two years.

The Metrowater board has also not called for fresh tenders. Activists think it could be because the DMK does not want to give the project to contractors identified by the AIADMK government.

Wabag secures repeat order worth Rs 430 crore from RIL

VA Tech Wabag has secured an order towards engineering, procurement and construction of a 53mld desalination plant at Jamnagar, Gujarat, worth about Rs 430 crore from Reliance Industries.

The EPC scope of work under this RIL order includes design, engineering, procurement, supply, construction, erection, pre-commissioning, commissioning and performance guarantee test run of the sea water reverse osmosis plant, slated to be built in the premises of RIL’s refinery at Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Wabag has already executed a 24mld SWRO plant in the same premises.

Ruptured part of Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road caves in – Chennai

A section of the 200 Feet Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road near Periya Eri caved in on Saturday due to a rupture in a desalination pipe going underneath the bridge.

Highways department officials said there was a rupture in the pipe underneath the radial road and it was fixed within a few hours.

“This caused only a very minor cave-in. We fixed it in a few hours once we got the news on Saturday,” an official said.

Gujarat sets up desalination plant for industries in Dahej

This is the first desalination plant of 100 MLD set up by any government in the country.

Rs600m allocated for desalination plant in Gwadar

The federal government has allocated Rs600 million under its PSDP 2022-23 for setting up a desalination plant in Gwadar to fulfill the fresh water requirements of the port city.

The desalination plant in Gwadar would desalinate 5 million gallons of sea water daily to cater the needs of the port city.

The total cost of the project is estimated at around Rs3397.858 million out of which Rs1,110 million.

Groundbreaking ceremony held for 5,000-ton/day Gwadar Seawater Desalination Plant – Pakistan

The project will provide 5,000 tons of fresh water per day to Gwadar residents and enterprises, greatly mitigating water shortage.

In his speech, PM thanked China for its assistance and the hard work of Chinese builders.

Nemmeli desalination plant to be ready by 2023 – Chennai – India

Chennai MWSSB has begun work to lay pipelines to draw seawater and discharge brine from the upcoming third desalination plant at Nemmeli. The plant will have a capacity to treat 150 million litres of seawater a day (mld).

Over 50% of the construction of seawater intake sump, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and dissolved air flotation, in the plant has been completed so far.

The CMWSSB has laid cofferdams (a structure that enables work to lay pipelines for the desalination plant).

Defunct plants fuel drinking water crisis in coastal Odisha villages – India

Residents of seaside villages are grappling with drinking water crisis this summer as excessive salinity in Luna river has rendered two saline water treatment (SWT) plants defunct in Mahakalapada block of Kendrapara district.

To desalinate Luna river water and provide drinking water to locals, the State government in 2017 had set up the two SWT plants in seaside villages of Gojabandha and Mangalpur.

Villagers were getting 40,000 litre of drinking water from the two plants. But last week, both the plants became defunct.

Minjur desalination plant under maintenance – Chennai – India

According to a release from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, water supply from the plant will be stopped from 8 a.m. on March 8 to 10 a.m. on March 11.

Areas such as Madhavaram, Manali, Tiruvottiyur, Ernavoor, Kathivakkam, Patel Nagar and Vyasarpadi will not get supply from the desalination plant.

Alternative arrangements have been made to supply water from the Puzhal water teatment plant for these areas.
