Hondoq ir-Rummien desalination plant could be reactivated

PN MP Chris Said had asked a question on the subject to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in Parliament, and in response, he was told that “the aim is to improve the quality of drinking water. We are currently in the environmental study process to ensure that no negative effects will occur to the sea in the bay and the surrounding area. Desalination Membrane produced by 3D Printer in the future?

Perspective on 3D printing of separation membranes and comparison to related unconventional fabrication techniques.

Abstract:
Additive manufacturing, likewise known as 3-dimensional (3D) printing and rapid prototyping, has the ability to create almost any geometrically complex shape or feature in a range of materials across different scales. It has found its applications in various areas, such as medicine (bioprinting), art, manufacturing and engineering. On the other hand, its use in separation membrane engineering is relatively new. The use of additive manufacturing techniques could provide more control towards the design of separation membrane systems and offers novel membrane preparation techniques that […]

Floating desalination and nuclear power plants (NPP)

Middle Eastern countries are considering purchase of floating nuclear power plants (NPP) of Russian make that were developed for sea water desalination, a top Russian government official said on Wednesday.

“Arab countries are more and more interested in buying these floating nuclear power plants from us in terms of sea water desalination, rather than from the standpoint of electric power generation,” Sergei Ivanov, Russian special presidential representative for Environment Protection, Ecology and Transport was quoted as saying by Russian news agency TASS , which cited Rossiya 24 TV Channel .

Russia is the world’s only country producing floating NPP […]

AQUACOSM – Network of Leading European AQUAtic MesoCOSM Facilities Connecting Mountains to Oceans from the Arctic to the Mediterranean

International network connects experimental research in European waters Leibniz-Institut für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei (IGB)

Lakes, rivers, estuaries and oceans are closely connected. Despite this, aquatic research is still divided in marine and freshwater sciences. Now, scientists from 19 leading research institutes and universities and two enterprises from 12 countries across Europe aim to change this and have joined forces in the project “AQUACOSM – Network of Leading European AQUAtic MesoCOSM Facilities Connecting Mountains to Oceans from the Arctic to the Mediterranean”. The network will perform the first systematic large-scale experiments in both freshwater and marine ecosystems. The project is coordinated and […]

Cuba to use Russian desalination plants to fight drought

The installment of portable desalination units in coastal towns is a way for the Russian federation to help Cuba palliate the negative effects of the drought hitting the island-nation.

During the 2nd Cubagua International Convention, the proposal to bring sea water desalination plants was made by Cubacon, a Russian investment consultancy firm.

Its technical supervisor, Igor Masik, said they can provide Cuba with equipment made by AQUA-LIFE Ltd Partnership to be used to supply fresh water in coastal towns, agriculture, hotels and other facilities (LINK).

World Water Day

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about taking action to tackle the water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water.
The Sustainable Development Goals, launched in 2015, include a target to ensure everyone has access to safe water by 2030, making water a key issue in the fight to eradicate extreme poverty.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated March 22 as World Water Day. World Water Day is […]

Swamy: Set up desalination plants along Tamil Nadu’s (India) coast

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy,  a copy of which was accessed by The Pioneer, the senior BJP leader has offered the Chief Minister all help and assistance for the implementation of the desalination project.

“It is important to augment the supply in rivers of Cauvery and Vaigai. This can be done by desalination of water in many places along the Tamil Nadu coast,” Swamy said in the letter to the Chief Minister.

He has pointed out that the desalination plants being operated by the Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu and the […]

Water from the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant has begun to enter the Cardinia Reservoir as part of a plan to deliver water security to Victoria.

Victorian Minister for Water, Lisa Neville, said that water customers will not face additional charges on their water bills for 2017’s 50GL water order or the subsequent three minimum water orders.

This will save customers $12 for 2017’s order on an annual average water bill. This will be done via efficiencies found within the water contract.

“We’ve learnt the lessons from the millennium drought and this secures our water supplies at a time when our reserves are decreasing,” Ms Neville said.
