Kuwait calls for updating water desalination tech in GCC states – Kuwait

A senior Kuwaiti official called on Tuesday for updating water desalination technology in the GCC countries amid ongoing dependence on the water to secure this vital living resource.

GCC states continue to count on desalinating the sea waters and this warrants continuous action for upgrading and nationalizing the desalination technology, in tandem with dedicating attention to scientific research for enhancing the production, trimming the costs and averting adverse impact on the environment, said Minister of Education Dr Hamed Al-Azmi.

Bahrain’s Al Dur Power & Water Company in $1.3bn refinancing – Bahrain

Al Dur Power & Water Company, one of the largest power generation and water desalination companies in Bahrain, has announced to close a US$1.3bn refinancing, replacing the one originally provided in 2009.

The new financing was provided by a syndicate of 20 banks including local, regional and international banks. The refinancing facilities extend up to 14 years and include US$450mn of conventional facilities and US$850mn of Islamic facilities.

Abu Dhabi studying tenders for developing Taweelah desalination plant – Abu Dhabi – UAE

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy said on Sunday it was studying tenders for developing the Taweelah desalination plant.

Seven offers were received and opened, the department said in a statement, adding that “it expects to register the lowest production cost of 8.26 dirhams ($2.25) per 1,000 gallons”.

Mubadala unit, Fewa to develop desal plants in N Emirates – Sharjah – United Arab Emirates

Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Investment Company said one of its entities, MDC Power Holding Company, has signed a joint development agreement with The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) to co-develop seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants in the Northern Emirates.

The Fewa was established to cater the needs of the Northern Emirates population by providing world-class electricity and water services, improve the standards of living and achieve sustainable growth by 2021.

Department of Environment opposes water transfer from Persian Gulf – Tehran – Iran – Persian Gulf

With regard to the environmental conditions of the Persian Gulf, the Department of Environment (DOE) has taken a firm stand against water transfer from this body of water, deputy environment chief, Masoud Tajrishi, has said.

Mahmoud Shayan, a board member of Bank Melli Iran has said that the project of water transfer from the Persian Gulf to central provinces will complete by next year, Mehr news agency reported on September 30.

Strategic blueprint to boost water security – Bahrain

A new plant and expansion of existing ones will bolster Bahrain’s capacity to cope with the ever-increasing demand for water, the Electricity and Water Authority said yesterday.

This is part of the authority’s strategic power and water masterplan to meet future needs, according to a statement.

Bahrain’s water production plants generate about 186 million gallons of desalinated water per day, it said.

Red tide disrupts operation of desalination plant in Barka – Barka – Oman

A red tide outbreak in Barka has forced ACWA Power to operate two of its water desalination plants below their capacity, resulting in a financial impact of RO140,000 to the company.

The company expects further delay in reverting to full operations as proliferation of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) is continuing, which is likely to increase the financial impact of the outbreak.
