Essel Projects to set up Rs 700-cr desalination plant in Gujarat – Gujarat – India

The Gujarat government on Saturday announced the setting up of State’s largest desalination plant at Jamnagar with daily capacity to treat 100 million litres per day (MLD) of sea water.

An agreement is signed between Gujarat Water Infrastructure Limited and Essel Infraprojects Limited for the Rs 700-crore project to be developed under Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani termed it a historical development, which will make drought a matter of history for the State.

“Historic Moment”: Gujarat To Get Major Sea Water Desalination Plant – Gujarat

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Saturday that Gujarat was now on the threshold of ending its perennial water scarcity with the launch of a major desalination project to treat as much 10 crore litres of sea water a day in the drought-prone Saurashtra region.

The chief minister called it a “historic moment”, as the state-owned Gujarat Water Infrastructure Limited and private sector Essel Infraprojects Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the project at the Jodia coast in Jamnagar district in Saurashtra region.

Desalination of seawater in Karachi is the most effective solution to the city’s growing water-shortage problem, stated officials of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) and Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD).

Chennai-based National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is setting up the world’s first self-powered desalination plant using the technology of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) in Kavaratti Island in Lakshadweep.

Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan laid the foundation stone for the project on Monday.

Madras High Court puts on hold commissioning of desalination plant in Chennai; postpones hearing till 1 October – Chennai – India

The Madras High Court has restrained Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board from issuing work order to successful bidder of the contract for construction of third desalination plant at Nemmeli till further orders.
