Thames Water refreshes plan for Abingdon Reservoir, despite opposition from GARD

GARD chairman Derek Stork, a former nuclear physicist, feared there was now a ‘strong possibility’ that Thames Water will favour the reservoir in its final document.

Writing in a GARD newsletter this month, he said: “They have either ignored, or over-ridden with dubious arguments, the majority of critical comments coming from stakeholders like GARD.

“Other [water] sources are less costly, less damaging to the environment, less disruptive to local communities and more robust against climate change.”

Desalination plant labour strike called off

A labour strike at the Episkopi desalination plant was called off following a meeting between union representatives and Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou. Discussions between workers, management and the Ministry to find an agreement between the conflicting parties were effective says the Labour Ministry in an announcement.

The union representatives met with Emilianidou on Wednesday afternoon, and went on to diffuse the strike actions announced at the desalination plant in Episkopi, Limassol’s main water source.

The desalination plant supplies 80% of the city’s water on any given day, however the government can channel water from other sources, such as dams for instance. [

Egypt looks to the sea to meet its need for water

With Egypt’s population having more than doubled in the past 25 years, its water supply is increasingly scarce. The country is allowed to draw 55 billion cubic metres a year from the Nile, which is pretty well tapped out by the time it reaches the Mediterranean. It gets another 5 billion cubic metres from aquifers and rainwater.

Ethiopia is about to begin filling the reservoir of its Grand Renaissance Dam, which, depending on how quickly it is done, could reduce the flow of the Nile by as much as 20 per cent over the next few years.

Doosan Heavy unit bags 88 bln-won water purification facility deal

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., South Korea’s top power equipment maker, said Thursday that its British affiliate has clinched a 87.5 billion-won ($77.8 million) deal to build a water purification facility. Doosan Enpure has signed the deal with Severn Trent Water, a British water supplier, Doosan Heavy said.

The facility will be able to process 320,000 tons of water on a daily basis. Its construction will be completed in 2020, according to Doosan Heavy.

In 2012, Doosan Heavy acquired Enpure in a bid to strengthen its desalination business. (Yonhap)

Oman Power and Water Procurement (OPWP) is to appoint a consultant to provide legal advisory services for the competitive tendering of a coal-fired independent power plant (IWPP).

The tender documents will be provided in electronic format upon evidence of bank transfer or can be collected directly up to June 22. The last date for submission of the documents is July 24, according to a statement.

The proposal for a coal-fired project is part of a shift from use of natural gas for power generation as also for water desalination. In April, OPWP had issued its request for proposals from international consultants for providing financial and commercial advisory services for the development of the coal-based IPP.

The selected consultant will advise OPWP on the scope and [

Desalination plants warn of imminent closure – LIBYA

A member of the Board of Directors of the General Company for Desalination and the director of the desalination plant in Tobruk, Fathallah Naas, warned that desalination plants in Libya would cease to operate after two months.

Naas added that the lack of second choices would result in the company having no choice but to shut down all plants having a major effect on approximately one and a half million citizens dependent on desalinated water.

Naas clarified that the desalination plants had entered this dangerous stage because a lack of the availability of necessary and essential chemicals that
