Wave-powered buoys vastly reduce the ecological cost of desalination – Canada

This remarkable desalination device, made from 170,000 recycled plastic bottles, runs on mechanical power from waves as it floats in the ocean, and creates up to 13,000 gallons (53,000 liters) of fresh water a day – while discharging far less concentrated salty brine than other designs.

Coastal Commission OKs Second New Desalination Plant of 2022 for Monterey Bay – California, USA

California American Water, the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater company, plans to build the plant to pump ocean water, desalinate it and provide drinking water to 100,000 people on the Monterey Peninsula. The largely Latino, agricultural community of Castroville would also receive the water at a discount.

The plant would produce about 4.8 million gallons of water per day when it begins operating, with the possibility of increasing production later. California American Water hopes to have it operating by the end of 2027. The water company is seeking to bolster [

IDE Technologies wins tender for new desalination plant – Israel

The Birkat Miriam plant will produce 100 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually, improving the reliability of Israel’s water supply to Haifa, the Western Galilee and Upper Galilee regions.

Birkat Miriam will join Israel’s other large scale desalination plants in operation – Ashkelon, Ashdod, Palmachim, Hadera and Sorek 1 – while IDE also constructs Sorek 2. These desalination plants are part of an Israeli government effort to increase the amount of desalinated water in the country’s overall water resources. The water contribution from the Western Galilee plant will bring total production of desalination plants [

Floating PV for water pumping, desalination – Murcia, Spain

An irrigation community has built a 786 kW floating solar array on a small water reservoir in Murcia, Spain. The facility will provide power for a solar water pumping system, a desalination unit, and the community itself.

Comunidad de Regantes de Águilas, a Spanish irrigation community, recently completed the installation of a floating PV plant on one of its irrigation ponds in the municipality of Águilas, in the southern Spanish region of Murcia.

Anglo American to meet almost half Los Bronces water needs from desalination plant – Chile, South America

Anglo American (LON: AAL) secured on Wednesday a supply agreement to meet almost half the water requirements of its Los Bronces copper mine in Chile with desalinated water from 2025.

The deal with Aguas Pacifico will allow the miner to bring ocean water to Los Bronces’ recirculation systems, with the goal of not drawing fresh water from the area where the mine is located.

In this first phase, the company will use 500 litres per second of desalinated water to cover 45% of [
