…Next year, construction of the Grand Sfax desalination plant, in the Sfax governorate, will begin.

This was reported by Tunis Agence Presse (TAP) citing Samir Taieb, Tunisia’s minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fishery.

The plant will treat daily 200,000 m3 of seawater and be built over 20 hectares in the southern delegation of Sfax. The project is to cost overall 480 million dinars ($197 million) and will be financed with a loan secured from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It should be delivered in 2020, according to Taieb.

The infrastructure should provide the region with its own drinking water network and help it better tap into its underground water resources. This would be quite welcomed as the region currently gets drinking water from the Northern part of the country.
