… Last week, it was announced that the development of the geothermal fields of (the island of) Santorini and the management of the urban waste of the region goes to PPC Renewables following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Nektarios Santorinis , Mayor of Thera, Anastasios-Nikolaos Zorzos and the CEO of PPC Renewables , Elias Monachia and approved by the Municipal Council of Thira. More specifically, PPC Renewables will undertake the possibility of developing geothermal energy on the island for power generation, heating, cooling, seawater desalination and use for hot springs. The development of a geothermal power plant with the exploitation of the geothermal potential, aims to cover the current and future needs of the island, even in a peak period, ensuring the energy autonomy and stability of the island’s network. Using geothermal energy will definitively solve the issue of providing high-quality drinking water to residents and visitors. In addition, cooling-heating needs for hotels and irrigation needs can be covered by the desalination method, giving opportunities for development and the agricultural sector. During the construction phase of the project, as well as during the operation of the facilities, new jobs will be created which will be mainly covered by the inhabitants of the island. …
